How to start
your own Web Design Agency Business
In this article,
Paul Burrows takes a brief look at how to start up a successful
Web Design Business.

Starting up in
Web Design is a great way to help others achieve goals and be
successful whilst at the same time running your own profitable
business. Web Design allows you to use your creative flair and
technical skills to deliver sharp looking, well structured and
functional websites that will help your customers on the way to
achieving their goals.
Before you begin
to think about setting up any business you need to research your
market and plan how you are going to approach your start-up –
and a Web Design Agency business is no different. Consider your
strengths and weaknesses along with the trends in the market
place and find yourself a niche. There are lots of agencies out
there who try to cover all aspects of web design but they
struggle and they also find it difficult to set themselves apart
from the rest of the competition, so keep it focused and you’ll
find your business will be much more successful. Once you’re
successful in your niche you can always broaden and diversify
your offering - but walk before you can run.
So, analyse your
strengths and weaknesses and find out what you’re good at: you
may be a great technician and a whiz with HTML, scripts,
databases and code or you may have a creative flair and focus
more on the design aspect of sites. Whatever it is you identify
as your strengths stick with them and build up your business
idea around them.

Equally as important as the business idea and understanding your
strengths is knowing your market. Who is it that you are
offering your services to? Research, talk to friends in business
and find out what their web-related business demands are and
build up a picture of who your customers are going to be and the
service that you are going to offer them.
Give some thought
to how you are going to run your business on a day-to-day basis.
As with a lot of internet based businesses nowadays it’s easy to
start up in your back bedroom or cellar and doing it this way
will keep costs low, which is very important at start-up. So, if
you’ve got the room operate from home initially and only
consider taking on the rental costs of an office if there are no
other options. Keeping costs down means that you can keep your
pricing competitive and your profit levels high but don’t be
tempted to price yourself cheaply – if your customers are
looking for a cheap and quick site then they are less likely to
recognise and value what you do for them and will not be willing
to pay a fair price.
Make sure you
have access to support for areas of your service that you may
need to call on for help – you may have decided to focus on the
graphics and design aspects but you still need to produce the
goods so build up a network of support of programmers or
database experts to ensure that you win the customer and retain
them.
Finally, once
you’ve determined who your market is and what you’re going to
offer them you need to start promoting yourself, and what better
way for a Web Designer to promote than through your own website?
Make it stand out from the rest, work to get your site up the
rankings and most importantly, be clear what it is that you can
do for your customers and make them want to come to you.
